The XX @ O2 Brixton Academy

Here’s another blog about another band. Will it be biased? I think you already know the answer to that.

Last night my sisters and I travelled to Brixton to see Romy, Jamie and Oliver, who are collectively known as The XX. I have wanted to see them since 2010, but I discovered their first album XX a little too late and missed their tour dates. Two years on and with the release of their second album Coexist, I finally got my chance…

…and it was completely worth the wait. When they opened with Angels last night I felt like I had reached enlightenment. Considering this single is my least favourite track on the album, hearing it live has transformed my opinion of it. Romy Madley Croft has the most angelic, harmonious and sensual voice, I couldn’t stop staring at her. She makes me want to cut my hair even shorter and consistently wear a black blazer.

The whole performance was mesmerising: the melancholy conversational singing style, the electronic drums, the heavy bass and high pitch guitar riffs were elysium on the ears, but when coupled with the moody strobe lights and smoky stage, it felt as if you were watching something supernatural. Romy and Oliver possess some of the deepest, atmospheric voices I’ve ever heard.

I’m going to be re-listening to XX and Coexist on repeat for a very long time.
